A Wichita man was killed late Saturday afternoon in a kite boarding accident at Cheney Lake.

Cheney State Park ranger Mike Satterlee said the accident occurred about 5:30 p.m. on the west side of the lake in Kingman County.

He said it appeared that a gust of wind caught the man’s kite before it hit the water, knocking the man unconscious.

Witnesses pulled the man from the water and administered CPR until rescue crews arrived, Satterlee said. He said paramedics pronounced the man dead at the scene.

The victim was identified as a 42-year-old Wichita man but his name was not immediately released.

Kite boarding is common on the east side of Lake Cheney, Satterlee said, but the activity sometimes moves to the west side if the wind is more favorable there.
