A 41-year-old man has pleaded guilty to felony theft in connection with the theft of copper from dozens of air conditioners earlier this year.

Byron Stuckey will be sentenced on Aug. 30. Charges included attempting to elude officers when he was captured on July 11 after stealing copper from an air conditioner at a house in the 11100 block of East Pawnee, just west of Greenwich Road in southeast Wichita.

Police have said they think Stuckey is responsible for at least 68 air conditioner thefts — including numerous churches — with the cost of replacing the damaged units exceeding $100,000. Stuckey pleaded guilty to one count each of felony theft and attempting to elude Friday in Sedgwick County District Court.
