Pooch Plunge Aug. 5 in Valley Center pool

The Valley Center Animal League will hold its first annual Pooch Plunge Aug. 5 at Lions Park Swimming Pool.

The pool, at 255 E. Allen in Valley Center, will be open to dogs from 5:30 to 8 p.m., with swimming time split for small dogs (30 pounds and under) and larger dogs (31 pounds and over).

Swimming for small dogs begins at 5:30, with a smallest dog contest at 5:45, a long jump contest at 6 and a Frisbee catch contest at 6:15.

At 6:50, the large dogs will take over, with a largest dog contest at 7:05, long jump at 7:20 and Frisbee catch at 7:35.

Admission is a minimum donation of $5 per dog, with a limit of two dogs per person. Dogs must be leashed when not in the pool and must have proof of rabies vaccination. Only dogs will be allowed in the water.

All proceeds will go to Valley Center Animal League, which cares for animals in the community.

Dog washes raise money for good causes

Got a hot, dirty dog? Let volunteers from local groups get your pooch cool and clean, with proceeds going to animal-related causes.

Every Saturday through Sept. 1, weather permitting, volunteers from RETAIN will wash dogs from 1 to 4 p.m. outside Heartland Animal Hospital, 4100 N. Woodlawn in Bel Aire. Donations of $4 for a small or medium-size dog and $5 for a large dog are requested.

Proceeds go to Responsible and Ethical Treatment of Animals in Neighborhoods, a local nonprofit group that helps pay for spay and neuter surgeries for pets.

On Aug. 4, the Sedgwick County Animal Response Team will host a dog wash at GreenAcres Market, 8141 E. 21st St.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and a donation of $20 is suggested.

Proceeds go to SCART, an all-volunteer, nonprofit organization dedicated to the survival and welfare of animals during natural and manmade disasters in the Sedgwick County area.
