For the third year, the Wichita Art Museum, 1400 W. Museum Blvd., will host its Summer Birthday Bash from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday.

The event, originally created for the museum’s 75th anniversary, has seen increased attendance every year, said Debbie Deuser, membership and volunteer coordinator.

“It became so popular and so much fun that they instituted it as a yearly thing,” she said.

Hiland Dairy will provide free ice cream, coupled with toppings from Wichita’s Nifty Nut House. While guests indulge in ice cream, they can take in the sounds and sights of the Wichita State University Steel Drum Ensemble.

To help celebrate the museum’s anniversary, families and children have an opportunity to craft a piece of artwork that will hang in the museum for a year.

Based on the artwork of Louise Nevelson, this year’s piece will consist of cardboard assemblages glued onto sheets of plywood. Each person who comes out, regardless of age, is invited to create a cardboard assemblage, School Programs Coordinator Janet Riddel said.

The combined assemblages will hang on the museum wall for a year, Riddel said, facing the popular “Dreamers Awake” sculpture by Tom Otterness.

Last year, about 125 children came out to make a mosaic-style piece of work. It is still hanging by the children’s section of the museum.

“It’s nice to have a community piece because everybody feels a bit of ownership,” Riddel said. “It makes them feel good to have something up in a museum.”

To participate in the assemblage-making, take the elevator down to the lower level of the museum and follow the handprints on the wall to the studio.

Admission to the event is free, as is every Saturday at the museum. For more information, call 316-268-4921 or visit wichitaartmuseum.org.
