Via Christi Health will expand its inpatient rehabilitation services to the city’s west side when it opens a unit within Via Christi’s newest hospital.

Officials said in a news release Wednesday that the unit will have 18 beds and be located in a part of Via Christi Hospital on St. Teresa that was earlier slated to house a medical-surgical unit.

“From the time we opened our hospital, we heard from physicians, patients and their families requesting that we expand our services to include close-to-home rehabilitation care,” said Kevin Strecker, St. Teresa’s president, in the release.

The new unit will be in addition to inpatient rehabilitation services Via Christi provides at its rehabilitation hospital at 1151 N. Rock Road, on the city’s east side.

It will also mark the second provider of inpatient rehabilitation services on the west side. Via Christi competitor Wesley Medical Center and HealthSouth operate Wesley Rehabilitation Hospital at 8338 W. 13th St.

The Aug. 1 opening of the unit marks the second anniversary of St. Teresa.

The 144,000-square-foot hospital at 14800 W. St. Teresa, near 21st Street and 151st Street West, has 68 private rooms, six operating rooms, a labor and delivery center and provides emergency services.

A blessing, dedication and open house for the new rehabilitation unit will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday.
