A motorcyclist was taken to the hospital with serious injuries after he was struck by a van in south Wichita, police say.

The accident happened shortly after 4 p.m. Monday at 31st South and Old Lawrence Road, near O.J. Watson Park. The motorcyclist, who a Sedgwick County dispatcher identify as a 49-year-old man, was driving westbound on 31st Street South when a van turned left onto the road into his path, striking the motorcycle, according to Wichita police Sgt. Donald Kimball. The driver of the van, a woman, failed to yield at the stop sign where Old Lawrence Road meets 31st Street South, he said. The intersection is located near the old entrance to O.J. Watson Park, near Broadway.

The man was taken to Via Christi Hospital on St. Francis with serious injuries to his leg, Kimball said.

The woman driving the van was not injured, according to police.
