A teenage boy seen hanging out the window of a moving car died late Saturday night when the vehicle crashed in southern Overland Park, police said.

The black Isuzu Amigo crashed at about 11:15 p.m. Saturday when it drifted off the road and collided with a tree and a guardrail just west of 143rd Street and Quivira Road.

Classmates attending a vigil tonight at Olathe East High School identified the boy as senior Nate Trinkle, according to The Star’s reporting partner, KCTV.

Students gathered to remember a friend they described as a smart classmate and dedicated athlete who always wore a smile.

Police said there were three teens in the car, including two 17-year-old girls whose names were withheld.

The westbound Amigo, driven by one of the girls, was seen weaving in the road shortly before it drifted off the north side of the street, police said. The boy killed in the crash was hanging out of the passenger-seat window, police said.

The girls were treated at a hospital for minor injuries.

The cause of the wreck was under investigation.
