Infant in intensive care with head injury, family member arrested

A 2-month-old boy is in pediatric intensive care at a local hospital and a family member has been arrested on suspicion of child abuse, authorities said.

The boy was brought to Wesley Medical Center at about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, said Lt. Jeff Weible of the Exploited and Missing Child Unit. Doctors ran tests on the child, and they called police when they discovered he had internal bleeding on the brain.

An investigation uncovered a possible suspect, Weible said, and additional questioning led to the arrest of a 21-year-old man at the hospital on Thursday afternoon. The child is in critical condition at Wesley, Weible said.

The child lives southeast of Central and Ridge, police said.
