Jon Carlson

Chief operations officer, Delta Dental of Kansas

Carlson’s previous experience could prove valuable to Delta Dental if the federal Affordable Care Act continues to survive political and legal challenges.

As a consultant, he recently helped build a private insurance exchange operation in Kansas City for the SelectQuote insurance company.

“If the Affordable Health Care Act stays intact, then exchanges are going to be something that all insurance carriers are going to have to understand how to work with,” he said.

Carlson, 50, started at Delta Dental a couple of weeks ago. Delta is the largest dental benefits carrier in the state with more than 900,000 enrollees and such client groups as Westar Energy and the state of Kansas.

Carlson earned degrees in computer science and engineering from Graceland University in Iowa, and a master’s degree in business administration from Rockhurst University in Kansas City.

After starting his career in information technology, he switched to operations management and worked for Sprint, Laurus International, Fidelity Investments and CI Partners. Much of his career has been spent setting up and running customer contact centers, including some outsourced to the Philippines and Dominican Republic.

At Delta, he’ll be responsible for claims processing and other aspects of customer service.

Carlson and his wife, Delanne, have three children. He enjoys exercise, reading and spending time with his family — “although as they get older, I find that you have to schedule vacation just to spend time with them,” he said.
