The fifth annual Greater Wichita Senior Spelling Bee will be Aug. 14. Anyone 50 or older may participate.

Those interested should call the LifeVentures office at 316-682-0504 to request a registration form. The cost is $5.

The bee begins at 9:30 a.m. Aug. 14 at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 600 N. Greenwich Road. Contestants will first be given a 50-word written test. From that group, the top 15 spellers will compete in an oral spelling contest. The winner and first runner-up will advance to the Kansas Senior Spelling Bee at the Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson.

Mary Ann Fenske, a previous winner of local and state spelling bees, will serve as pronouncer this year. During a break, Fenske will talk about her experiences competing at the national senior spelling bee in Wyoming, where she placed eighth and 13th in different years.
