Wingnuts newcomer Garardo Avila hit a three-run homer in the eighth to break a tie and give Wichita a 6-3 win on Saturday night in Amarillo, Texas.
The win snapped a four-game losing streak.
Avila, who joined the team Friday, homered with two outs in the eighth. The Sox had intentionally walked John Rodriguez ahead of Avila’s homer.
Avila, a first baseman, had been playing for River City in the Frontier League before coming to the Wingnuts on Friday.
Rodriguez drove in Wichita’s first two runs with a single in the third inning. Sean Smith’s sacrifice fly scored Steve Carrillo in teh fourth.
Wingnuts starter Derek Blacksher (5-2) pitched 7 1/3 innings and got the win. Matt Nevarez walked two batters but struck out three in the bottom of the ninth to record his fifth save.
