New standards for appliances

Under new rules announced by the Energy Department, front-loading clothes washers will use 15 percent less energy and 35 percent less water. Top-loading washers will use 33 percent less energy and 19 percent less water. Dishwashers also will have new energy-efficiency standards, saving 15 percent on energy and 20 percent on water.

An analysis shows $400 to $600 in savings on energy and water bills with a new clothes washer. Buyers of new dishwashers would save about $100 in those costs.

The appliances are expected to cost more, but utility savings are expected to offset the additional cost within two years. The changes take effect in 2013 for dishwashers and 2015 for clothes washers. Some highly rated appliances already meet the new standards.

Designer Q&A

Q: In my limited experience, I have found that hiring professional painters is one of the best decisions one can make in re-decorating. Everyone always says, “Oh just do it yourself, it’s so cheap,” but it just plain never looks as good. Would you agree that this is definitely a worth-every-penny thing?

A: Agreed. Hiring a painter saves time and marriages. And it produces a wonderful result that you can enjoy for years.
