With Fourth of July festivities out of the way, it’s almost time for another signature summer event — the 18th annual Automobilia Moonlight Car Show and Street Party.
Gary Carpenter, the man behind the happening, says the show, scheduled from 6 p.m. until midnight next Saturday in downtown Wichita, will pretty much follow the pattern of recent years. Please note those are the correct times; an erroneous listing indicated the show starts at 10 a.m. Show cars will be allowed into the show area beginning at 4 p.m.
The show will feature somewhere in the neighborhood of 900 cars, trucks and cycles, with plenty of vendors, seven live bands, three food courts, a swap meet and a model car contest. The popular Moonlight Cruise segment of the event, featuring hundreds of show cars rumbling through the streets, will run from midnight to about 1:30 a.m.
Car clubs from as far away as Colorado and Arkansas are planning to attend, said Carpenter, who noted that pre-registration appears to be running ahead of schedule.
This year’s show is being held in conjunction with Kansas International Dragway’s 15th annual Wheat State Nostalgia Drag Races. "We’re probably going to have more competition cars than usual in the show," Carpenter said. "A lot of guys are really excited about it."
Weekend passes to the drag races will be available at the KID booth during the Automobilia show.
Carpenter said the car show will feature several just-completed cars’ debut before the Wichita crowds that always throng the streets of Old Town Saturday evening. There’s no admission charge for spectators, so why not come on down and take part in the Automobilia tradition?
