Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital will build an immediate care clinic in Augusta.

The El Dorado-based hospital said the clinic will offer treatment for minor illnesses and injuries using a physician assistant or advanced practice registered nurse during evenings and weekends.

The clinic will be in the 400 block of West Seventh Street, between the O’Reilly Auto Parts store and Moore Car Wash. It will include space to allow specialist physicians to have office hours in Augusta.

Work on the new clinic is expected to begin in the next few weeks and will start with the razing of an existing building on the site, said Gene Kimble, the hospital’s marketing director.

Kimble said the hospital is in the early stages of planning the new clinic, so it hasn’t yet determined an exact size. Selections of an architect and general contractor are also pending.

He said it’s not the hospital’s first project outside El Dorado. Years ago the hospital built a medical office building in Augusta; it was later sold to the provider occupying the building, he said.

But it is the hospital’s first immediate care clinic.

“There is a need for this in Augusta,” Kimble said. “We’ve had discussions with city officials for a number of years about their needs. This is what we feel addresses the immediate need in Augusta.”

Augusta’s only hospital, Augusta Medical Complex, closed nearly a decade ago.
