The grounds of Joyland are overgrown with weeds, covered with graffiti and littered with the skeletal remains of the amusement park rides. However, Restore Hope, the organization heading up the Joyland Restoration Project, recently obtained nonprofit status and plans to continue the effort. Restoring the park could cost as much as $10 million. So far the organization, led by 18-year-old Alex East and other young visionaries, has raised about $6,000, earned mostly through T-shirt sales and citizens’ donations.
