Total wages paid in Sedgwick County fell in the fourth quarter, even as employment rose, according to the U.S.. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The average Sedgwick County weekly wage was $877 in the fourth quarter, down 2.6 percent from the fourth quarter of 2011.

Employment ticked up 0.2 percent over the same time frame.

The vast majority of the country’s 323 large counties showed a similar pattern.

A decline in the total amount of wages is unusual, according to the bureau. Nationally, it’s happened in only five quarters since 1978 when there have been especially large job losses.

But this was the first time total wages paid fell even as employment rose. One reason, the bureau said, was lower year-end bonuses.
