Patti Broyles Harper
Producer/project manager, Intake Studios
Harper brings experience with big-time filmmaking to her job with Intake Studios.
In 1996, she went to the Cannes Film Festival as part of the official entourage of “Kansas City,” which Robert Altman made while Harper was director of the Kansas City Film Office.
“It has been a while ago, but it was an experience I’ll never forget,” she said.
Harper grew up in a farming family in the Lawrence area. She attended the University of Kansas and Kansas State before graduating with an education degree from the University of New Orleans. She taught kindergarten and first grade for five years in Kansas City, Mo., before working in television production there for 10 years, a highlight being the Merchant Ivory film “Mr. and Mrs. Bridge” starring Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward.
She worked in Los Angeles for several years before returning in 1994 to head the Kansas City Film Commission office, where she stayed until 2003. In addition to “Kansas City” she helped with projects including HBO’s “Truman” and Ang Lee’s “Ride With the Devil.”
“We were a big economic impact on the city during those years,” she said.
Since then Harper has worked as a freelance producer in the region.
At Intake, she said, “I’ll be managing the projects that come through – motion graphics, visual effects – and then producing on larger commercials that have live action components.”
The opportunity to work as a team with Intake’s staff made the job attractive, she said. It also didn’t hurt that her husband, Jeremy, farms in Greenwood County about an hour from Wichita. The couple have a home there as well as in Baldwin City.
“It’s an opportunity for me to stay rural and still be city savvy,” she said.
