Kansas home sales in May were 13.2 percent ahead of May 2011, according to the Kansas Association of Realtors.
Sales totaled 3,187 units for the month, up from 2,816 units in May 2011.
Sales nationally sales rose by 9.6 percent for the month.
There was 5.6 months of supply of new and existing homes on the market.
"This is another encouraging sign that the market is returning to a normal level," association president John Brocker with Allen County Realty, in Iola, said in a statement.
The statewide median sale price last month was $145,000.
