Emergency crews recovered the body of a fully clothed, 54-year-old man from the Little Arkansas River near Central Riverside Park on Saturday morning.

The man, a Wichita resident, carried identification. The cause of death and exactly how long the man was in the water have not been yet determined, Wichita police Sgt. Bill Stevens said.

Two people kayaking saw the body and called 911 around 10 a.m., police said.

The body had floated at least 20 yards down the river from the time crews first responded to the call. The fire department, police department and EMS were on the scene. Crews pulled the body just north of the Nims Street Bridge between Central Avenue and Stackman Drive. Fire crews used a boat to retrieve the body.

“There was a pretty good current today, and the body was moving along at a pretty good pace,” Stevens said.

The investigation is ongoing.
