Quilt show continues today

The Common Threads Quilt Show continues today from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Century II. The biennial show, put on by the 700-member Prairie Quilt Guild, features 500 quilts, more than 60 vendors from across the country, workshops, and a chance to win an opportunity quilt, shown above, which won Best in Show at the Kansas State Fair last year and first place in the group category at the American Quilter’s Society show this year. Two special events today: an award ceremony of Quilts of Valor to veterans, at 11 a.m., and an auction of mini quilts to benefit quilting education in schools, at noon. Tickets to the show cost $10.

Staying minty-fresh

When you cut mint from the garden or bring it home from the store, give it a good wash in cold water, then snip off the bottoms of the stems. You can prolong its life — sometimes by weeks — if you stand the stems upright in a glass of water and refrigerate. Then be prepared for a minty fresh refrigerator.
