A Sedgwick County Jail deputy who has been the subject of sexual misconduct allegations at the jail was charged Friday with multiple sex crimes, jail records show.
David E. Kendall, 21, was charged with 12 counts: two counts of aggravated sodomy, three counts of sexual battery, one count of making a false information and six counts of unlawful sexual relations, jail booking records show.
Sheriff Robert Hinshaw said Friday evening that Kendall has been put on unpaid suspension pending the outcome of the criminal case.
Records show Kendall was booked back into the jail at 4:32 p.m. Friday; he had previously been released on bond. No new bond amount was listed in the jail records.
Earlier Friday, sheriffs detectives presented their investigation of Kendall to prosecutors with the District Attorneys Office. Deputy District Attorney Marc Bennett, who oversees sex crimes cases, confirmed that Kendall had been charged but said he couldnt comment further.
Kendall faces his first court appearance early next week.
The FBI on Wednesday began its own civil rights investigation of allegations of misconduct at the jail.
Previously attorneys have said that two inmates alleged that they had been raped by a jail deputy, who has been identified by authorities as Kendall. Mark Schoenhofer, one of the attorneys representing inmates who say they were victims, said Friday evening, On behalf of my client and his family, were happy that the District Attorneys Office is moving forward with charges.
Hinshaw held a news conference Tuesday to announce that sheriffs detectives arrested Kendall as a result of an ongoing criminal investigation of alleged sexual misconduct in the jail.
Kendall has been with the Sheriffs Office since October 2008.Reach Tim Potter at 316-268-6684 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
