Dining Panel review: M.I.F. Deli will be on go-back-again listBy Ching Brubaker
Wichita Eagle Dining Panel
We’ve driven by M.I.F. Deli, located on the northeast corner of Central and Edgemoor, several times and have never stopped in until recently.
In case you were wondering, M.I.F. stands for Mediterranean and International Foods. Though there are several Greek items on the menu, it’s probably more accurate to classify the restaurant as Mediterranean because of the variety of offerings.
On our visit, my husband Brian and I shared a small plate of hummus ($4.99) as our appetizer. It wasn’t the best we’ve ever had, but it was pretty good. For his meal, Brian got the chicken gyro with a cup of tomato soup ($8.99). Brian was really excited about the chicken gyro because it tasted a lot like the doners (a Turkish kebab-style sandwich) he ate almost daily at a Turkish place that he frequented in Attendorn, Germany. I liked that the restaurant didn’t skimp on the chicken. Brian’s gyro had large chunks of chicken coated with the deli’s special sauce, and it was delicious. Brian also let me taste his tomato soup, which we both thought was good but too heavy for our post-workout lunch.
I ordered the curry chicken on pita ($6.50) and loved it. The chicken had great curry flavor that wasn’t overpowering. The tomatoes tasted fresh and balanced the other flavors. You can also get the curry chicken on a croissant ($6.50), with soup or salad ($8.99), or as a salad entree topped with toasted almonds ($7.99).
Sandwiches are served with a slice of pickle and a bag of chips, but diners have the option of getting a side of soup or salad, which is extra. The pita sandwich portions are very generous. Brian and I could barely finish our meals.
There are so many things on the menu that I want to try. I want to return for the grape leaves (four for $4.99), kibbe balls (two for $4.99), cabbage rolls (four for $4.99), hummus shawarma ($7.99), and famous homemade meat pies ($5.99). I’m not sure how I’m going to eat all of that and my curry chicken salad. We may need to make several trips.
