The director of the Wichita Toy Run, which annually raises thousands of donations of toys and holiday contributions for local charities, was killed in a motorcycle crash Monday night.

Holly Potelle, 55, died after gusty south winds blew her motorcycle off K-42 as she rode west near Viola shortly after 6 p.m. Monday, the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office reported.

Potelle tried to guide her motorcycle back onto K-42 from the ditch, Lt. Randy Cole said, but she hit a driveway and was thrown off the motorcycle. Authorities at the scene estimated she was thrown about 30 feet.

She was pronounced dead at Via Christi Hospital on St. Francis in Wichita.

The National Weather Service in Wichita estimated that winds out of the south were blowing at between 30 and 35 miles an hour at the time of the accident.

Last year’s Toy Run was the 32nd edition, attracting an estimated 2,777 motorcycles to the event.
