A 22-year-old Kansas City, Kan., man died Friday morning after he apparently fell into a lane of traffic on U.S. 169 north of the Broadway Bridge, Kansas City police said.
Police identified the victim as Devan C. Heineken.
The accident occurred about 7 a.m. in the northbound lanes. Heineken apparently had climbed onto a 5-foot retaining wall on the highway’s east side and may have lost his balance when jumping off the wall onto a narrow curb next to a traffic lane.
The driver of a northbound pickup truck told police that it appeared Heineken fell into the roadway in front of him and that he didn’t have time to react.
The right front side of the truck hit Heineken, flinging him onto the hood. He later died at a hospital.
Relatives did not know what Heineken was doing in the area or why he was trying to cross the highway, police said. The highway runs between Wheeler Downtown Airport and railroad tracks.
