Featured business person: Chris Riedel
Retail sales manager, Sunflower Bank
Riedel didn’t study banking or business in college. But enthusiasm and on-the-job training have helped him rise into management in Sunflower Bank.
“I love working at a bank where they really pride themselves on service,” he said. “They really do put a value on our community involvement.”
Riedel, 36, grew up in Hays and studied pre-engineering at Fort Hays State University before leaving to work in restaurant management.
He joined the Salina-based Sunflower Bank in 2004 as an assistant branch manager in Hays and was promoted to customer service manager in Wichita in 2010.
In his new role, he’ll continue to try to expand Sunflower’s retail presence on a regional basis. In addition to Sunflower’s four branches in Wichita, he’ll work with branches in Topeka, Lawrence and elsewhere.
“I have a wide range of responsibilities from sales efforts to operational,” he said. “I view it as a coach in those markets I’m in, to help them find out where does the retail business come from and how can we grow our retail business? It could be accounts, consumer loans, anything that somebody walks into the bank and needs.”
Outside of work, Riedel is a United Way youth leader and enjoys snow and water skiing, hiking, music and travel.
“I like going places I’ve never been.”
