Sedgwick County raises hourly fee to house jail inmates

The hourly fee Sedgwick County charges to cities to house inmates in jail on municipal charges will increase Jan. 1 from $2.09 to $2.34.

The county began charging cities a fee to house inmates facing municipal charges in 2008. It has not raised the fee since then.

The fee is based on the direct costs of housing inmates, analyzed by an external auditor. The $2.09 fee was based on 2006 direct costs.

The county estimates the increased fee could bring in an additional $310,000, but the number of inmates in jail on municipal charges is down.

The county says it began charging the fee to encourage cities to reduce the number of people coming to jail, which has struggled with overcrowding.

The $2.34 hourly fee will go into effect next year but will be based on 2011 direct costs.
