Marge Setter was as peerless as she was relentless when it came to advocacy and action, whether on behalf of her advertising and public relations clients or the needs of her adopted hometown. Wichita lost a great champion when Setter died last week at age 87.
If not for her leadership, Wichita’s 90-year-old Orpheum Theatre surely would have been lost to demolition in the 1980s. Instead, it’s busy with concerts and closing in on its restoration dreams. The Wichita Symphony Orchestra, the Girl Scouts, the Wichita Public Library Foundation and so many other arts and charitable organizations also relied on her skills, ideas and energy.
Setter once said that “a society is remembered for its cultural contributions.” She will be remembered for those, and much more.
