K-State, KU stay alive at Big 12 tourney

Kansas State jumped on Oklahoma State for three first-inning runs and eliminated the Cowboys from the Big 12 baseball tournament Thursday with an 11-5 win in Oklahoma City. Later in the day, Kansas ousted third seed Texas 4-2.

Four Wildcats drove in two runs each. K-State will face Baylor today.

Oklahoma State starter Randy McCurry faced five hitters without recording an out before he was knocked out of the game during K-State’s three-run first. Kansas State (27-30) added three more runs in the third and broke the game open with a four-run fourth inning after the Cowboys (32-25) scored three times in the bottom of the third.

A three-run first inning and strong pitching lifted Kansas.

Wes Benjamin (5-7) gave up one run on five hits over six innings to get the win while Robert Kahana allowed one run during the final three innings to earn the save.

John Curtiss (2-3) gave up all four Kansas runs over 6 2-3 innings to take the loss for second-seeded Texas (30-22).

The Jayhawks will play Texas A&M tonight.

Oklahoma beat top seed Baylor 3-2 in a winners’ bracket game when Evan Mistich singled home Erik Ross with two outs in the ninth.

Missouri topped Texas A&M 5-3 in the other bracket.

MVC Tournament — Eighth-seeded Creighton stayed unbeated at the MVC tournament in Springfield, Mo., beating Illinois State 10-3 on Thursday and earning a spot in Saturday’s championship game.Jake Peter was 4 for 4 and drove in two runs.

Missouri State stayed alive, beating Bradley 11-8 in 13 innings in an elimination game. The Bears played undefeated Southern Illinois later Thursday. The game had not ended at press time.
