The man who was struck and killed as he was jogging late Thursday night has been identified as Dr. W. Howard Whiteside, a longtime pediatrician in Wichita.

Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Capt. Annette Haga said a Wichita man turned himself in at 8:30 a.m. Friday as the person who struck Whiteside as he was jogging in the 3600 block of East 61st Street North. Whiteside, who was 65, was found in the north ditch of 61st Street shortly before 2:30 a.m. Friday.

He had been reported missing by his wife at about 1:30 a.m. when she awoke and realized he had not returned from his evening jog, Haga said. Whiteside left the house at about 10:30 p.m. and was found about one-third of a mile from his house.

Detectives are questioning the driver now about the circumstances of the collision, Haga said.
