A 59-year-old child sex offender has escaped from his job assignment at the Lansing Correctional Facility, prison officials announced this morning.

Prison staff confirmed about 3 a.m. that Gary Leslie Furthmyer had escaped from his minimum custody assignment at the steam plant.

Furthmyer is serving time for a 1985 conviction in Sedgwick County of indecent liberties with a child and aggravated failure to appear. He previously escaped in 1988 and returned to prison in 1993, according to his prison history.

Authorities released his prison mug shots and asked anyone who has information to call 911 or the Lansing Correctional Facility at 1-913-727-3235.

Authorities warned that all escapes are considered to be armed and dangerous.
