Class will teach how to raise backyard chickens

If you’re interested in raising backyard chickens, this spring offers opportunities to find out more and to buy some chicks, even in the city.

K-State Research & Extension will offer a class April 14 on how to raise backyard chickens, presented by K-State poultry specialist Scott Beyer. The event was held for the first time last year and was packed, said extension agent Tonya Bronleewe.

When people were asked afterward why they took the class, the No. 1 answer was to teach their children responsibility, Bronleewe said.

“That made us think, instead of dogs they’re going to chickens,” Bronleewe said.

The second reason: to get eggs and eat local.

Wichita residents are allowed to have three hens without a permit, Bronleewe said. Beyond that, they can have as many as 12 with a $25 permit.

Meanwhile, Woodard Mercantile at 4160 N. Maize Road is celebrating Chick Days during the weekends of March, with chicks for sale and guidance on how to raise them, and Johnson’s Garden Center has chicks for sale again this spring at its store at 2707 W. 13th St.

The class on April 14 will be from 9 a.m. to noon at the Extension Center at 21st and Ridge Road and will cost $5. Register online at www.backyardchickenclass.eventbrite.com or call 316-660-0100 and ask for Jackie.

“It’s kind of a happening topic right now,” Bronleewe said.
