Few Wichitans may be motivated to vote on this busy day, especially because the ballot question is so confusing and the issue about a hotel-tax rebate is so narrow. But it is important to go to the polls.
The Eagle editorial board endorses the “yes” vote. That’s because, as we said Sunday, the financing tool has been used with three other downtown hotels and, in the case of the Ambassador Hotel, is part of a public-private partnership that was independently vetted and approved by the Wichita City Council.
Opponents have been lining up sympathy for their side since last fall’s petition drive to force today’s vote. And some will interpret a “no” victory as a blanket rejection by voters of any City Hall role in private development. But that would be no victory for downtown, where the strengthening revival still needs strategic use of public investment.
Wichitans who want an attractive, working, walkable downtown need to get out today and vote “yes.” And please don’t leave home without a photo ID.
For the editorial board, Rhonda Holman
