In most categories there were no clear-cut favorites at the 84th annual Academy Awards. But when it came to fashion on the red carpet it was a different story. Fashion predictors expected to see lots of color, statement dresses, some prints and long sleeves. Turns out there seemed to be something for everyone, including the predictors. There were more white gowns than expected and no prints.
Wow, can you imagine getting ready to be seen by millions of viewers, not counting those in the live audience? That would be tough duty. No wonder most stars now choose to depend on a professional fashion stylist.
Milla Jovovich was one of the first arrivals on the red carpet, wearing a beautiful white, one-shoulder gown by Elie Saab. Robin Roberts of Good Morning America also wore a tight, white sequin gown. But what a treat when Jennifer Lopez, wearing Zuhair Murad, and Cameron Diaz, wearing Gucci Premier, strolled across the stage to present the best costume design award. Both wore shimmering white/silver gowns. Pure Hollywood.
Were so used to seeing Rooney Mara of Girl With the Dragon Tattoo wearing black that her delicate white gown by Givenchy was a shock, but a good one. Octavia Spencer also chose white, which must have brought her good luck as she won the Best Supporting Actress award.
And it seemed people were determined to look their best, including some who didnt seem that concerned in the past. Glenn Close, who has missed the mark from time to time, chose a Zac Posen that complimented her coloring and her figure. Meryl Streep, who has expressed her regret that she didnt dress up more as she accepted an award, was ready this time in an elegant gold Lanvin gown.
The stars of The Bridesmaids didnt worry about what any bride would think this time. No hot pink. Melissa McCarthy wore a rose chiffon gown with heavy beading at the neckline and waist by Marina Rinaldi. Kristen Wiig wore a blush-color gown by J. Mendel. Another bridesmaid, Wendi McLendon-Covey, also chose blush. But Ellie Kemper chose a more dramatic color in a copper sequin gown by Armani Prive. And Rose Byrne wore a black sequin gown that shimmered and showed off every curve.
George Clooney looked great (what a surprise) in his Armani tux; his girlfriend, Stacey Keibler, looked like a statue in a light gold satin gown. She was taller than her date because shes 5 feet 11 and was probably wearing some killer shoes. Clooney told Ryan Seacrest, Shes seven feet tall.
Jessica Chastain looked like royalty in her Alexander McQueen black dress that was heavily embroidered with gold and silver.
And didnt Sandra Bullock look great? I thought that her black-and-white dress with intricate gold trim by Marchesa was a standout, and deserved more of a hair style than a straight ponytail to top it off. Viola Davis wore a green gown by Vera Wang that accented her new red hair.
Today the winners are happy, the losers are continuing to say, I was just happy to be nominated. The borrowed jewels and sometimes the gowns go back. And the Spanx are back in the drawer.
I can hardly wait until next year.
