This year, Liberal did not have the fleetest pancake flippers in the world.
Olney did.
Devon Byrnes, an 18-year-old from Olney, England, ran the race 10 seconds faster than Liberal’s Kaela Krueger. It is the first time Olney has won the race since 2006.
Byrnes ran the 415-yard course in 58.5 seconds, bringing Olney’s record to 26 wins against Liberal’s 36 in the 63 times the race has been conducted. One year, the outcome didn’t count when a BBC television van blocked the course in England.
The race is one of the wackiest in the world – women running with skillets and flipping pancakes and almost always getting worldwide media attention.
The race is always run at 11:55 a.m. on Shrove Tuesday, also known as Fat Tuesday.
According to legend, the Olney Pancake Race began on Shrove Tuesday in 1445 when a woman was using the last of her family’s cooking fat before Lent, when it was forbidden. She heard the church bells ring for services and ran to the church still wearing her apron, with skillet and pancake in hand.
Liberal’s second-place finisher was Patty Rutledge, 44; coming in third was Leslie Spikes, 29.
