Bicycle rider run over, killed by garbage truck in Hutchinson

A 35-year-old man died Monday afternoon when he was run over by a garbage truck while riding a bicycle in Hutchinson, police said.

Julian Olea Tomas was riding north on the sidewalk on the east side of Adams shortly after 2 p.m. when his bicycle collided with a Stutzman Refuse truck as it was turning, Hutchinson police Sgt. Brian Hirt said. The collision knocked Tomas off the bike, and he was run over by the truck.

Tomas was pronounced dead at the scene, Hirt said. There is no evidence alcohol was a factor in the collision. The incident remains under investigation.
