Four teenagers are in custody Sunday after going on a crime spree that included shoplifting, attempting to rob a couple and flashing a gun, police said.
Three 16-year-old boys and a 17-year-old girl started at about 9:30 p.m. Saturday by shoplifting at T.J. Maxx and Famous Footwear, near west Kellogg and Ridge Road, Sgt. Scott Bruno said.
The four teenagers then went to the nearby Walmart where they attempted to rob a 71-year-old man and 67-year-old woman in the parking lot. The four tried to take the woman’s purse and the man’s wallet, but the couple resisted. The teenagers fled in a black GMC Jimmy.
A short time later the teenagers showed up at a gas station at Maple and Tracy, near Towne West Square, where a person noticed they were acting suspiciously. The teenagers saw they were being watched and one of the 16-year-olds flashed a handgun. The four left, but the person followed them while calling 911.
Police stopped the teenagers at Zoo Boulevard and Joann, near Central. The gun was a pellet gun, Bruno said.
All four were booked on various charges in the Juvenile Intake and Assessment Center.
