Two people were killed early this morning when they were ejected during a rollover crash that shut down southbound Interstate 35 near Gardner for several hours.

The interstate, which was closed at Moonlight Road in Gardner, reopened about 6 a.m.

Authorities are investigating what caused the driver to lose control of the car about 1:45 a.m. The car rolled, ejecting both the driver and the passenger, said Master Deputy Rick Howell with the Johnson County Sheriff’s office. They were declared dead at the scene.

One of the people ejected appears to have been struck by a van that was also headed south on I-35 shortly after the crash. The van clipped the car before running over the person. It was unknown if the person was already dead when struck, Howell said.

The driver of the van pulled over and remained at the scene. No one was injured in the van.

The crash remains under investigation by the Kansas Highway Patrol.
