A community group is seeking volunteers to help feed lunch to children during spring break in March.
Organizers with Partners for Wichita say they will need at least 150 volunteers to staff the seven sites where noon meals will be served on weekdays, March 15-23. Wichita schools have spring break from March 19-23, but students also arent in school the previous Thursday and Friday because those are in-service days for teachers.
The group expects to serve about 3,500 children during its Filling the Gap Lunches for Kids program, said Sally Fahrenthold, who is coordinating the nondenominational effort.
Kid-friendly meals will be purchased from the Kansas Food Bank. The group will pay the Food Bank $2.50 for each meal, but the lunches are free for the children.
Those interested in volunteering should call 316-263-0810 or email partnersforwichita@cox.net.
Sites where lunches will be served are: Dellrose United Methodist Church, 1502 N. Oliver; Fairview Christian Church, 1650 N. Fairview; Linwood Ministry Center of Asbury Church, 1248 S. Lulu; and four neighborhood city halls Atwater, 2755 E. 19th St.; Colvin, 2820 S. Roosevelt; Evergreen, 2700 N. Woodland; and Stanley, 1749 S. Martinson.
To make a donation to help purchase the box lunches, contributions should be made payable and sent to the Kansas Food Bank, 1919 E. Douglas, Wichita, KS 67211. Designate Filling the Gap on the check memo line.
