DUST BOWL - W.E. Allbright, farmer, shown plowing, as dust blew, in an effort to check soil erosion by wind, March 31, 1935, Hutchinson, Ks. He adopted the plan of Gov. Alf Landon, who advocated plowing list rows at intervals to catch the drifting earth. Gov. Landon obtained a promise of federal aid in the dust-stricken area.

KANSAS-NEBRASKA ACT - 1859 Kansas boundary - From 1854 to 1861, much of what is today the state of Colorado was then Kansas Territory. The city of Denver was named for KansasÕ fifth territorial governor, James W. Denver. During the Wyandotte Convention of 1859 _ the convention that decided statehood _ free staters were concerned they could never settle the territory, so they moved the boundary east to where it is today.

BROWN V. BOARD OF EDUCATION - The Monroe Elementary School is a national historic site that was the segregated school attended by Linda Brown, the daughter of the lead plaintiff in Brown v. Board of Education. The school will open to the public as a park in 2003.

BROWN V. BOARD OF EDUCATION - This 1949 class photo of Linda Brown Buckner's kindergarten class at Monroe School in Topeka, Kan., shows Buckner fourth from the right in the back row. Linda Brown Buckner had to walk 24 blocks to attend kindergarten at Monroe School in 1949 in Topeka, Kan., although Sumner School was just three blocks from her home. But Monroe was for blacks and Sumner for whites until the U.S. Supreme Court in 1954 banned segregated schools in the Brown vs. Board of Education ofTopeka decision.
