AUSTIN — If Kansas wins the Big 12, the Jayhawks may look back on its 69-66 victory over Texas on Saturday as a defining moment.
Trailing by four with three minutes to play, the Jayhawks made enough big plays down the stretch pull out a victory in a building that hasn’t been kind to them over the years.
In an odd twist, Thomas Robinson started the game-winning play with a pass. The burly big man who finished with 17 points and nine rebounds, draw a double team as he swept across the line.
He spotted fellow post man Jeff Withey open under the basket. Withey finished and was fouled.
With the free throw, Kansas had turned a one-point deficit into a 68-66 lead with 37 seconds left.
Travis Releford then made the game’s top defensive play, getting a hand on J’Covan’s attempt.
That started a Kansas run out, and Robinson missed a layup but was fouled with 8.8 seconds remaining.
Robinson, playing on the one-year anniversary of his mother’s death, missed the first and made the second to complete his stat line with 17 points and nine rebounds.
With a final opportunity, Texas got the ball to Brown, its leading scorer and hottest hand. Brown, who had 20 of his 24 after halftime, shot wildly from the wing, and Kansas had the victory.
The seven-ranked Jayhawks, 16-3 overall, remained in first place in the Big 12 at 6-0. They’re the only conference team that hasn’t lost on the road this season. It was Kansas’ second in in its last five trips to Austin.
Texas, 12-7, 2-4, lost at home for the first time this season.
The Longhorns trailed by 15 early in the second half, but Brown brought them back.
It started with three free-throws after Justin Wesley hacked him behind the arc. That seemed to give Texas life and wake up the full house at the Erwin Center.
From there, Texas steadily pecked away at the Kansas lead, and Brown and forward Clint Chapman were in the middle of it.
Brown’s three closed Kansas lead to 58-57 with 6:10 remaining, and Chapman’s two free throws, which followed a Robinson air ball from 14 feet gave Texas its first lead of the game.
With 22 points, Tyshawn Taylor led the Jayhawks in scoring for the third straight game. He helped stake Kansas to a 12-point halftime lead with a three-pointer that was part of a 11-2 run that ended the half.
