LAWRENCE — Dave Campo, once the Dallas Cowboys head coach, has been hired as Kansas defensive coordinator.
Campo spent 18 of his 23 NFL coaching years in Dallas, and coached the teams secondary last season.
Before joining Jimmy Johnsons original Cowboys staff in 1989 and a member of the staff that won three Super Bowls, Campo spent 18 years in the college ranks.
He takes over a Kansas unit that finished last among 120 teams in the Football Bowl Subdivision in total defense and scoring defense. The Jayhawks, who finished 2-10 overall and 0-9 in the Big 12, surrendered averages of 516.47 yards and 43.75 points per game.
The season was filled with embarrassments. Georgia Tech rushed for 604 yards in running up 66 points. Oklahoma State scored touchdowns on every first-half possession in a 70-28 triumph, the last one with reserves. Texas A&M rushed to a 44-0 halftime lead and scored 61 for the game.
Campo was Johnsons secondary coach at Miami, Fla., for two seasons, including the 1987 national championship year.
He became the Cowboys head coach in 2000, succeeding Chan Gailey. All three of Campos teams finished 5-11 and he moved on to assistant positions with the Browns and Jaguars before returning to Dallas as the secondary coach in 2008.
Kansas head coach Charlie Weis, also a former NFL assistant, has covered familiar territory to him and the program in assembling a staff.
Weis retained Reggie Mitchell (running backs) and Buddy Wyatt (defensive line) from the previous staff of Turner Gill. He brought back former Kansas assistant and player Clint Bowen (special teams coordinator).
From his Notre Dame connections, Weis brought in Bishop Miege coach and former Chief Tim Grunhard (offensive line), plus Rob Ianello (wide receivers) and Ron Powlus (quarterbacks), most recently at Arkon.
From Florida, where Weis spent last season at office coordinator, came Jeff Blasko (tight ends) and Scott Holsopple (strength and conditioning).
