A 44-year-old woman was stabbed twice after she attempted to halt a purse snatching Sunday afternoon in northeast Wichita, authorities said.

The incident occurred at about 4 p.m. at 2620 E. 21st St., which is a few blocks east of Grove, police said. The woman was walking to Sonic with her 18-year-old daughter when a teenage girl approached and tried to steal the younger woman’s purse, Lt. Doug Nolte said.

When the mother stepped in to protect her daughter, the teenager stabbed her in the left arm and the left side with some type of knife. The assailant left without the purse, Nolte said. The victim was taken to Wesley Medical Center for treatment of the stab wounds, which were not considered life-threatening.

The suspect is a black female between the ages of 16 and 18, the victims told police. She is about 5-feet-3 and 160 pounds.
