She met him on Craigslist, and decided to chat with him in person.
They met at the QuikTrip in the 4700 block of East Central late Thursday night, police say, and he took her back to his place. He gave her something to drink, and the 21-year-old woman lost consciousness almost immediately.
When she woke up, “he was on top of her,” Lt. Steve Kenney said.
He later pushed her out of a moving car as he drove down the street, she told police, and she walked to the nearest convenience store to call 911. She was taken to Via Christi Hospital on East Harry for treatment.
A 46-year-old Wichita man has been identified and questioned in connection with the alleged incident, said Lt. Randy Reynolds, head of the sex crimes unit, but no arrest has been made pending further investigation.
Reynolds said incidents like this are not common, despite the popularity and proliferation of social networking sites.
“We get a handful a year,” Reynolds said. “Who knows if some go unreported? There’s no way of knowing that.”
But there are still a number of things people can do to protect themselves, police officials say.
When meeting someone from a social networking site for the first time, Kenney said, “you need to have a plan.”
Meet somewhere safe where there are many other people, such as a restaurant or coffee shop. While convenience stores are often busy, Kenney said, it’s people who are coming and going and are less likely to notice something unusual.
Tell others where you’re going and who you’re meeting.
Never accept a drink that the person you’ve just met has prepared for you.
“You never know what you’re going to get” when you’re meeting someone from a social networking site for the first time, Kenney said.
