All right, you guys.
Its a new year and the perfect time to get your fashion act together. If that sounds too sissy, lets say, its new and improved wardrobe time.
While a lot of resolutions are aimed at weight loss or more exercise, not many involve giving your closet a good cleaning out and replacing things that dont fit (that sport coat that is 4 inches from being able to button) or items so out of style, you shouldnt be caught wearing them (that big-shouldered, leather coat that Shaft made so popular).
At Gentry Ltd. at the Waterfront, 13th and Webb Road, Brandon Sullivan reminds customers to add two must-haves for an updated wardrobe. One is a casual topcoat. Sullivan says the new length is at the knee or below.
Theyre more functional that way. You can wear it with jeans or dress it all the way up. Its not the heavy old topcoat of your dads, he said, adding that the newer-styled shoulder will be softer or less structured.
Sullivan also suggests adding colored denim to your jeans collection. We havent seen these since the 80s, but colors such as desert tans and solid black are the ones selling well, he said.
J.V. Johnston of Johnstons, 13th and K-96, says every man needs to make sure he has a dark suit for marrying and burying.
But the problem is when they have a dark suit and theyve had the same one for 10 years. They need to make sure its not the big baggy look because now shoulders are more narrow. Clothes are back to fitting again, Johnston said.
He agrees with Sullivan that a guy needs a topcoat. Generally, they want black or charcoal gray. We have sold a few camels. It is important to replace those basics. I like selling fashion, but its the replacements that are necessary, he said.
Brian Taylor at Bricks in Bradley Fair, 21st and Rock Road, didnt hesitate when asked what guys should get to immediately update their wardrobes. One thing that definitely needs to be replaced is something I deal with daily: these guys with pleated pants. They need to throw those out and replace them with flat-front pants, Taylor said.
And he wants you to check the width of your tie. It should be 3 inches, he said.
Take stock of the wardrobe items you got for Christmas. Next, do a complete closet clean-out then make a list of what you need to replace. Take your list and head out to the after-Christmas sales.
Wear those new clothes and get ready for lots of compliments.
