WICHITA — Two shootings early Friday in southeast Wichita – one that left a 19-year-old man in critical condition and another a drive-by in a residential neighborhood – are linked, Wichita police said.
After responding to a report of shots fired shortly after 2 a.m., officers found the 19-year-old with a gunshot wound to his head lying in the parking lot of the Bai Wei Asian Diner, 1845 S. Rock Road, Wichita police Lt. Todd Ojile said. Less than an hour later, at least one person in a vehicle fired shots at three homes in the 2200 block of East Stoneybrook, about a mile south of the restaurant.
Officers were on scene at the restaurant when the drive-by shooting occurred.
The 19-year-old was rushed to Wesley Medical Center in critical condition. The man is a documented gang member, police say.
An update on his condition was not available Friday evening. Police did not release the man’s name.
At least two other men, who were not at the scene when officers arrived, suffered injuries in the restaurant shooting, Ojile said. Shortly after police responded to the shooting, a 21-year-old man with multiple gunshot wounds to his back arrived at Via Christi Hospital on East Harry, Ojile said. The man was transported to Via Christi Hospital on St. Francis and treated for nonlife-threatening injuries. He was released late Friday morning, Wichita police Capt. Brent Allred said.
Another man, 24, arrived at Wesley on Friday morning. He was treated for a single gunshot wound to his back and released.
No one was injured in the drive-by shooting, Ojile said.
Police have yet to identify suspects in either shooting.
This is how events unfolded, according to police:
A verbal disturbance started for unknown reasons between two groups of people, who were inside the restaurant. The groups left the building and gathered in the parking lot, where shots were fired.
Three men — ages 19, 21 and 24 — were shot, one critically.
Members of one group left and went to houses on East Stoneybrook. Shortly before 2:45 a.m., at least one person in an unknown car fired shots at the houses. The shots hit three houses and two vehicles in the area.
“We believe it’s … ongoing from the restaurant back over to the house,” Ojile said.
Police responding to the Stoneybrook shooting found several bullet casings in the street. Several people who were at the houses when the shooting occurred fled, according to a report by at least one of two eyewitnesses police questioned at the scene.
Ojile said police don’t know yet whether the shooter was targeting people or the homes.
“We’re still trying to piece it all together,” he said.
Officers are interviewing several witnesses to the restaurant shooting, including some who also were present at the drive-by shooting.
Last May, Thoung Phan was shot and killed shortly after leaving the Bai Wei restaurant, police said. He was chased out into the street and shot by two men. The case remains unsolved. Police say it was gang related.
Police would not say whether Friday’s shootings were gang related.
