Wichita police break up underage-drinking party in southeast Wichita

About 40 people, most of them under 18, were detained or arrested late Saturday after police were called to the scene of a loud party in the 3100 block of South Davidson, near Oliver and 31st Street South, police said.

Police arrested five people, and called the parents of 35 people, all of them underage, said Lt. Doug Nolte of the Wichita Police Department. The parents were asked to take their children home. About 100 were present at the party, where underage drinking was occurring, Nolte said.

Two people, a 22-year-old and a 16-year-old, were arrested on charges including battery on a law enforcement officer. One juvenile was arrested as a runaway, and two more were taken into custody as children in need of care after their parents or guardians could not be located, Nolte said.

The 22-year-old was charging male partygoers a cover charge and allowing females in at no charge, Nolte said. Nolte said it was good that the party had not led to accidents or other problems. Neighbors called police at about 11:30 p.m.
