Earl Lauer's 1969 Shelby GT 500, foreground, and his 1969 Mach 1 illustrate two approaches to high performance Mustangs during that model year. The Mach 1 came equipped with a strong 390 cubic inch V-8 and fastback styling. The Shelby, meanwhile received a much stouter 428 Cobra Jet engine and restyled front and rear end treatments.

With upgraded heads, intake, cam and carb, the Shelby needs all the air it can pull through the functional hood scoop. The fiberglass hood is supported by a prop rod instead of springs, to keep the hood from bending in the hot summer sun.
