Economy, seizures put man behind on billsBy Matt Riedl
Share the Season is an annual campaign that offers one-time aid to people affected by unforeseen hardships. The people are not identified to protect their privacy.
This self-employed carpet installer is seeing fewer jobs lately, something he blames on the economy.
“Construction has really slowed down,” the 27-year-old said. “It’s really killing business.”
When no jobs come in, he experiences high stress, which results in occasional seizures that hospitalize him for two to three days. Doctors are still unsure of the cause of his seizures.
“It’s kind of embarrassing, to be honest,” he said. “You just hope it doesn’t happen in front of your kids, while you’re on a job or while you’re driving.”
He has fallen behind on his bills because of the lack of jobs and whenever he has to miss because he is hospitalized.
“When business gets slow and you’re only working one day a week, it becomes physically impossible to survive on that,” he said. “And when you have a one-income family of four it’s even harder.” He supports his girlfriend, 23, and two sons, 11 and 4.
Share the Season was able to provide $700 to help him pay his utility bills. For this, he said, he was very grateful.
“We really appreciate the help,” he said. “I just want to wish everyone the best and to keep taking it one day at a time.”
