Troy, KS, age 21. On Nov. 8, 2004 tragedy struck with the explosion of an Improvised Explosive Device near a Suburban vehicle being used by the Kansas soldiers on a security mission as a convoy escort for the chief United Nations weapons inspector. Killed were SGT Donald A. Clary, Troy, KS and SFC Clinton L. Wisdom, Atchison, KS. Several others were severely injured.
Clary and Wisdom were the first Kansas National Guard casualties of Operation Iraqi Freedom and the first Kansas Army National Guard soldiers to die in combat since the Vietnam War. The two soldiers died after they positioned their vehicle between a convoy they were assigned to protect and a vehicle driven by insurgents which exploded.

Staff Sergeant Henry William Linck was born in Manhattan, Kansas on December 25, 1982. He joined the Army in October 2000 and was assigned to Alpha Company 30th AG BN, ITB, Fort Benning, Georgia. Upon completion of ITB at Fort Benning, Georgia in April 2001, SSG Linck was assigned to the Long Range Reconnaissance Surveillance Detachment (LRSD), Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. On 11 October 2005 he arrived at Fort Richardson, Alaska and was assigned as a Squad Leader in Able Company, 3rd Battalion, 509th Infantry (Airborne). SSG Linck is posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and the Purple Heart. He is a graduate of the Warrior Leaders Course, Ranger Course, Air Assault Course, Basic Airborne School, Dragon Master Course, and the U.S. Army Jumpmaster School.

The two soldiers died after they positioned their vehicle between a convoy they were assigned to protect and a vehicle driven by insurgents which exploded.
Wisdom was also a veteran of Grenada and the Persian Gulf War.

El Dorado, KS, age 25. Died as result of enemy action near Forward Operating Base Summerall outside of Bayji, Iraq. It was his fourth deployment since arriving at the base Nov. 28, 2000, and his second tour in Iraq.
His military decorations include the Air Force Commendation Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster and with Valor, and an Air Force Achievement Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster.

Edgerton, KS, age 19.
Austin died in Ramadi, Iraq, fighting in Operation Iraqi Freedom during one of the bloodiest months during the war. Austin died of wounds suffered after an Iraqi insurgent threw a grenade into his tank.
Shane was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, the Overseas Service Ribbon and the Combat Action Badge.

South Haven, KS, age 25. Died at Landstuhl Army Medical Center in Landstuhl, Germany, on Oct. 26, of injuries sustained in Balad, Iraq, on Oct. 23, when his dismounted patrol was attacked by enemy forces who threw an explosive device from their moving vehicle.
One time he asked his mother why he had so many freckles, and she told him they were kisses from God. His response was, ÒWell, tell God to quit kissing me so much.Ó
At his funeral, Brig. Gen. Vern T. Miyagi described him as the soldier who would always do the right thing even though no one was looking.
He left for Iraq in January of 2005 and was stationed at Anaconda, where he was immediately placed in charge of the ÒHeather Project,Ó a special mission to decrease the number of roadside attacks and ambushes. Evan successfully decreased the number from an average of 30 per month to three. Due to his success, in August of 2008, the ÒSgt. Evan S. Parker PavilionÓ was dedicated in his honor at Fort Shafter Flats OfficersÕ Army Headquarters in Honolulu. He was also awarded the Hawaii Medal of Valor.

Tonganoxie, KS, age 22. Died of injuries suffered on his 22nd birthday during a sniper attack in Mosul. Frantz's platoon was conducting an operation in an area of Mosul known as "Bedrock." Frantz was in his Stryker vehicle protecting dismounted members of his platoon when he was attacked.
At his funeral, Maj. Gen. Charles H. Jacoby Jr., a two-star general in the U.S. Army, presented Frantz's military medals -- the Bronze Star and Purple Heart -- to his family.

He enlisted in the United States Army in November of 1998 and was a cavalry scout for two years before reenlisting on March 23, 2001. As a cavalry scout, he went on tour to Kuwait in 1999 and was later deployed again to Kuwait on his second tour in April 2002 until October of that same year.

Capt. Nathanael J. Doring and Cpl. Richard A. Bennett were piloting their AH-1 Cobra gunship on a routine maintenance flight when it crashed into Lake Habbaniyah, officials said. Enemy fire was not suspected in the incident.
His awards and decorations include, the National Defense Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.
CPL Bennett's dog died one day before the May 27th crash that took RickyÕs life, and they were laid to rest side-by-side.

Derby, KS, age 21. pecialist Joseph F. Herndon II made the ultimate sacrifice for his country when he was mortally wounded from a sniper attack while pulling security during an Informal Operations patrol north of Huwayjah. SPC Herndon performed enthusiastically and courageously during the Alpha Company mission to gather intelligence in the city. As a M203 gunner, SPC Herndon played an invaluable role in guaranteeing the Wolfhound BattalionÕs mission success. During the past six months of deployment, SPC Herndon executed complex combat operations to perfection while contributing to the BattalionÕs overall mission including the execution of over 100 combat raids and over 180 combat patrols. For his selfless contribution and heroic service in support of the Wolfhound Battalion, SPC Herndon was awarded the Army Commendation Medal with Valor for his heroic actions during the Battle of Huwayjah on April 7, 2004. His first Purple Heart was awarded when he was wounded by heavy RPG-7 fire while fighting in the Battle of Huwayjah. His second Purple Heart was awarded from wounds received on June 27, 2004 when the vehicle he was patrolling was hit by an Improvised Explosive Device in the city of Huwayjah. His third Purple Heart has been posthumously awarded for being mortally wounded on July 29, 2004 during a patrol. SPC Herndon has also been posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, the NationÕs fourth highest award for Valor in Combat. SPC Herndon has been awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge and the 25 Infantry Division (Light) shoulder sleeve insignia.

Killed in a April 9, 2004, battle in the Iraqi city of Lutafiyah during Operation Iraqi Freedom. The 24-year-old Redfield native was honored that year during a memorial service at Camp Lejeune, N.C., and also posthumously received a U.S. Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal honoring him for his bravery and distinguished service during the battle.

Nine members of the Eighth Kansas and U.S. Sanitary Commission were present for his funeral. The Eighth Kansas carried the national colors and its battle flag during the ceremony, which also was attended by several hundred members of the Patriot Guard. At a ceremony in Emporia earlier in the morning, David's mother and father, David Lane, were presented Purple Heart, Bronze Star and Good Conduct medals by Gen. Robert Durbin, commanding general of the First Infantry Division at Fort Riley. Military grave-side honors were conducted by Fort Riley soldiers, and Durbin presented the American flag draped over David's casket to his mother.
