Kansas State athletic director John Currie wishes the Bowl Championship Series would pick a philosophy and stick with it.

The Wildcats didn't earn a berth in the most lucrative bowls even though they ranked three and five spots better, respectively, in the BCS standings than two at-large teams, Virginia Tech and Michigan. Currie doesn't mind the idea of bowls choosing schools based on criteria other than the standings— except for the fact that the squads in the title game are selected purely by ranking.

"If we're going to have other games that are defined as the best because they're part of that system, then we probably ought to have a little bit better connect to what those rankings actually are," Currie said Wednesday after appearing on a panel at the Intercollegiate Athletics Forum in New York. "So either have them and use them, or just don't have them. I would be fine if we did away with the thing."

* Southern Mississippi coach Larry Fedora has accepted an offer to become North Carolina's next coach, sources said. They said the framework of a deal is in place, though it isn't final yet. Fedora has guided the 22nd-ranked Golden Eagles (11-2) to a school record for wins, with the last coming over the weekend against unbeaten Houston in the Conference USA championship game. The first-time head coach has compiled a 33-19 record in four seasons, and spent the three years before that as offensive coordinator at Oklahoma State.

* TCU offensive lineman Blaize Foltz, a junior from Rose Hill, was chosen All-Mountain West.

Soccer

Northwest forward Austin Clifton was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America's All-America team. He was also named to the All-Region V team and was selected the Kansas player of the year by the NSCAA.

* Hutchinson freshman forward Melissa Hetherington is a first team NJCAA All-American. Hetherington had 36 goals and 14 assists, and set a school record with six goals in a game.

Basketball

Bobby Wesley had 22 points and seven assists, leading Newman to a 77-60 win over Emporia State in Emporia. The Jets (6-2) made 12 of 24 three-point shots, with Wesley and Connor Walker each making three.

Barton's Dionne Harris was chosen NJCAA women's player of the week. Harris, a junior from Philadelphia, averaged 16 points and 10 rebounds in three games, including 23 points and 11 rebounds in a 63-61 win over No. 3 Independence.

Motorsports

Formula One is returning to the United States in 2012 after reaching a 10-year deal to hold the U.S. Grand Prix in Austin, Texas. The race will mark F1's return to the United States for the first time since 2007. Work on the Circuit of the Americas track had been halted for several weeks by the contract dispute. Race officials said construction would resume immediately.

Hockey

Pittsburgh Penguins star Sidney Crosby's will miss games tonight and Satuday as a precaution following a collision with teammate Chris Kunitz in Monday night's loss to Boston. Crosby was sidelined more than 10 months following two concussions in January. General manager Ray Shero said Crosby visited with his medical team on Wednesday and showed no recurrence of the concussion-like symptoms that sidelined him for more than 10 months this year. "However, we all think it's best that he sits out the next two games as a precaution."

* Claude Giroux scored 2:27 into overtime for the Philadelphia Flyers, who overcame a three-goal, first-period deficit and beat the Buffalo Sabres 5-4. The Flyers are an NHL-best 10-3-1 on the road.... Alex Ovechkin scored one of three straight goals by Washington in the third period during a 5-3 win over Ottawa.

Skiing

Lindsay Vonn finished in 1 minute, 10.68 seconds, holding off Fabienne Suter of Switzerland by 0.37 seconds to win the super-G event in Beaver Creek, Colo. Anna Fenninger of Austria was third. It was Vonn's first World Cup win on a U.S. slope. "I still don't believe it, really," said Vonn, who's from nearby Vail. "Getting a chance to win at home, with a home crowd here, it's just more than I could've expected." Vonn, 27, has won four consecutive World Cup races this season.
